hugo strange everywhere else.
below, you will find other hugo arcs that are notable to me. this page is a work in progress! i have many arcs to talk about, but just haven’t gotten around to it yet.
gotham knights: transference.
in many ways, this can be read as the ‘true’ continuation of batman: prey after batman: terror flubbed it. it’s considered a classic post-crisis hugo story, and is in many people’s eyes the best that hugo has ever been written in the comics. i do like this story! i think it’s well-written and there are lots of creepy, sexually charged moments, especially between hugo and nightwing and hugo and selina (as well as the catwoman doppelganger he brainwashed into impersonating her…). i just feel a little hollow as a hugo fan, because i don’t feel like hugo’s motivations are especially new ground at the point of writing. he does lots of cool and sexy things, but we already know he resents and desperately wants to supplant batman or kill him or both. that’s okay, this is ultimately a story about the batfamily and mutual trust and being secure in your own identity - it’s about the fact that robin and nightwing (and catwoman, but that was never really a question with her, except when she’s terribly written!) do indeed exist as individuals beyond their relationship to batman. hugo is just a good vehicle for that because, you know, extremely isolated and resentful psychiatrist who is at this point consumed by his obsession with batman, and who fled gotham before the ‘birth’ of the batfamily. he hates himself soooo bad and he’s such a profoundly lonely man.
